I was very interested in a typical winter occupation in Vienna - selling chestnuts on the street in the wintertime. I talked with five of them and asked them to let me cast their hands in wax and to immortalise the hands` gestures.
By choosing hands I wanted to underline their handwork and the fact they are continuously trying to warm them up by the oven. With this work I wanted to give the people, who work every day on the street, some form of recognition. I gilded all the hands and asked them to sign their casts. It reminds me of superstars who have had their gold star placed on boulevards in big cities. I have had very good feedback from this work.
